#NuMusic Friday: Diquan Julius, “La La Land”
In mid-February of this year, Diquan released his second single "La La Land", a honeyed serenade with a groove that soothes the ear and definitely sets the mood. On September 11th, the R&B and gospel singer announced on Instagram his distribution deal with Top Notch/Universal Music Group. Weeks later on October 9th, he re-released his single "La La Land" under new distribution with UMG.
Julius opened up to NUNAR about the inspiration for "La La Land" and the momentous milestones that have come to pass in his career. "La La Land was a song I came up with one day when I was sitting and thinking about how I wanted a song with a nice vibe that people could rock with. Something that would make people feel good about being in love," he tells NUNAR. "It couldn’t have been done in a better area than DC because of the soulful and eclectic sound that comes from the creatives in this area."
Diquan grew up in the church around a musical family in Hemingway, South Carolina however he didn't find his voice until college. "I didn’t find my voice until college where I started writing songs and recording R&B." The singer spent time in the gospel industry where he even made a Billboard indicator chart for radio station acquires of gospel songs.
Now back in the R&B world, Diquan Julius is invigorated and has advice for all up and coming artists: to "stay consistent and continue to claw and dig for their dreams. Expect to lose some while navigating this industry but don’t give up! You will need to finance your dreams and pay your bills so it’s ok to get a job. Stay consistent long enough and someone will find you!"
